As part of Green Shoots’ ongoing research programme to understand the education sector, we conducted an online survey with 200 neurodivergent students representing 85 different higher education institutions to:

  • Explore the unique challenges that neurodivergent students face
  • Find out what provision is available to neurodivergent students to help them overcome these challenges
  • Identify what additional support neurodivergent students would like from their university to help them thrive and succeed during their time at university.

Our survey found that the size of the neurodivergent student population studying at UK universities could be almost twice what we think it is. Some key stats from the study include:

  • Only 55% of neurodivergent students reported that they have informed their university about their condition, meaning that they do not have access to support
  • Only 39% of neurodivergent students say that their needs are fully understood by their university
  • Only 52% of neurodivergent students rate the support they receive from their university as being ‘good’ or ‘excellent’
